IND Director Attends One-Island Negros Region Summit

Institute for Negros Development (IND) Director Rhoderick Samonte joined the One-Island Negros Region Summit at Zaycoland Resort in Kabankalan City, June 6.

The summit was led by Occidental Gov. Alfredo Marañon and Oriental Gov. Roel Degamo; the summit aimed to gather officials and stakeholders of both Negros Occidental and Oriental provinces for the sharing of ideas and insights in order to get a consensus that will be presented to the national government.

One Negros Island Region Gets Nod

Majority of the attendees during the 1st Negros Island Region summit held in Zaycoland Resort and Hotel in Kabankalan City over the weekend echoed no objection on the proposed One Island region.

About 214 attendance were recorded, 150 of them officials.

Gov. Alfredo G. Marañon, Jr. opened up with a message that the day "is a very significant one where what will be decided here now will affect the future of our children and the children of our children."

He emphasized that the One Negros Island One Region dream is "non-political" event.

Aquino Recommends Study One Island Negros Region-DILG

President Simeon Benigno Aquino III has recommended studying the proposal of One Island Negros region, according to Atty. Anthony Nuyda, Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) Regional Director.

The proposal was presented by Governor Alfredo G. Marañon, Jr., during the San Carlos City visit of the president last May 15, Nuyda said.

He said, immediately the President directed DILG Secretary Mar Roxas to study the proposal.

He said the central office of DILG will be doing the study and the regional office was only requested to get some inputs.
