Defeating Babel with Pentecost:
A PASTORAL LETTER OF HIS EXCELLENCY, MOST REV. VICENTE M. NAVARRA, D.D. ON THE DIOCESAN OBSERVANCE OF PENTECOST AS A DAY OF PRAYER FOR THE NATION
The Babel and Pentecost of History 1. Today is not just a celebration of a feast, but largely a commemoration of an event. This day we remember the fulfillment of a promise by our Lord to send us from the Father a Paraclete, the Spirit of Truth who shall guide us to all truth (c.f. Jn 16:13).
2. There is a long tradition of Scriptural interpretation that juxtaposes Babel and Pentecost. The multiplicity of tongues at Babel came as a just punishment because of their proud and false claims, presumptuously putting themselves in God’s place. In the process, instead of working together, they saw themselves working against each other causing them to drift apart and finally crumble.
