2017 MassKara Theme Underscores ASEAN Integration
This year’s MassKara Festival which is themed, “Bacolod: City of Southeast Asia”, echoes the vital role of the city in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) community.
According to Mayor Evelio Leonardia, the theme highlights the city’s bullish prospects with the ASEAN integration.
“The integration of our country with nine other nations will mean that our horizons will widen, the playing field will be expanded, and we will have a new political and economic order,” Leonardia emphasized.
“It is time to think ASEAN when we plan for development,” Leonarida added.
Meanwhile, festival director Eli F. J. Tajanlangit cited that the MassKara theme is relevant to the city’s participation to the Philippine hosting of the 50th ASEAN founding anniversary.
To note, Bacolod City played host to these ASEAN-related events: 15th Meeting of the ASEAN Senior Officials Responsible for Information and ASEAN Landmark Lighting Ceremonies.
Bacolod City Government Center (BCGC) was also one of the 50 ASEAN landmarks lighted simultaneously along with other landmarks in the country.
A release from the festival committee stated that the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) recognizes Bacolod as the first local government to pursue initiatives geared toward awareness and implementation of the ASEAN integration.*(JSC/LML/PIA6 Neg. Occ.)
