8th Guv’s Cup Boxing Tourney Opens in Sagay
Hundreds of boxers from Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental are expected to show their boxing skills in the 8th Negros First Governor Alfredo G. Marañon, Jr., Cup Open Boxing Championships 2017 at Sagay City gymnasium on October 15-21.
Boxers from different districts in Negros Occidental that hurdles their district eliminations will advance to the finals in the 8th Governor Alfredo Marañon Cup Boxing Open championship.
Expected to show their boxing skills are boxers from Negros Oriental especially Dumaguete City, according to Provincial Sports Coordinator and Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines (ABAP) Western Visayas President and Executive Assistant to the Governor, Angel “Nonong” Verdeflor.
Boxers from the 6th District of Negros Occidental ran away with the over-all championship, dislodging many times champion First District and followed by the 3rd District as runner-up.
The week-long tournament will be sponsored by the Provincial Government of Negros Occidental through the Provincial Sports Office, City Government of Sagay through Mayor Alfredo Marañon III, Philippine Sports Commission, and Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines (ABAP) and the Negros First Sports, Sports Coordinators Association of Negros Occidental headed by Mr. Benzon Fernandez.
Verdeflor said he expects stiff competition in the tournament that draws boxers from seven districts in the province, including Bacolod City which will represent different weight categories.
He also expects some boxers from Dumaguete City, Bayawan City in Negros Oriental and other Local Government Units in Negros Island.
He said that the Negros First Boxing Team has already produced boxers joining in the Philippine Team, who used to be champions in the previous Governor’s Cup Boxing Tournament.* (Cyrus M. Garde)
