City Declares Sept. 16 as Ponce Day

As recognition and gratitude to the varied contributions to Bacolod City, Mayor Evelio Leonardia signed Executive Order No. 11, that declares September 16, 2016 as Teofilo Ponce Day.

Ponce, who has resided in Bacolod City since 1962, died of heart attack in August 31, 2016.

He was able to build an empire of businesses that started from radios and record players.

Married to Lucy Chua, with whom he has six children now all grown up and professionals, Teofilo Ponce has greatly contributed in the economic development of the city,

Leonardia in his Executive Order stated that, “By stint of hard work, and prudence, the Ponce couple was able to branch out into other forms of businesses creating an empire that included television sets and appliances, as well as dealership in the sale of vehicles like Nissan, Hyundai and Suzuki, and a Petron Gasul dealership. Later, they expanded to Smart, Cignal, the Pos Digital stores, Jollibee and Greenwich, and Check-in Pension House, providing jobs to about 2,000 employees.

They are known in Bacolod for their support to educational institutions, churches and several charitable organizations.

Importantly, Leonardia pointed out that the Ponces have consistently been awarded by Bacolod City as among the Top Taxpayers during the city’s Charter anniversary celebrations.*
