Couple Survives Shooting

A couple evaded death when the firearm aimed at them failed to fire several times, in Sitio Pagulingon, Barangay Nanunga, Hinigaran town, Negros Occ. around 11:30 p.m. Thursday.

Police Senior Inspector Jake Barilla, Hinigaran PNP OIC police chief identified the victims as husband and wife Marilou Guay Juguan, 53 and Leonardo Narido Juguan, 55, of the said place.

Police identified the suspect as Van Delos Angeles Flores, 48, single, of Sitio Gallera, Barangay Nanunga.

The victims were reportedly playing cards in the wake of their father when the suspect arrived and presented himself as a condoling visitor.

Later, the suspect felt uneasy, drew his firearm and shot Leonardo several times but the gun failed to fire.

Leonardo immediately escaped, leaving behind his wife Marilou, whom the suspect turned his attention to.

The woman knelt, pleaded for her life but the suspect approached and pointed his firearm to her chest and pulled the trigger, but it failed to fire. So the suspect again aimed at her head and fired thrice but also failed.

The suspect immediately escaped.

Police responded to the area and was able to arrest the suspect and detain him in Hinigaran PNP.

Police investigation bared that the suspect was to avenge the death of his nephew, Carlson Alvarez, 23, student of Central Philippine State University in Hinigaran town who was stabbed last September 13 around 11:00 p.m. in front of the Rooftop Videoke Bar along Lopez Jaena Street in Hingaran town.

The son of Marilou and Leonardo is one of the suspects, according to Flores, who is facing attempted homicide.*(Cyrus M. Garde)
