Puentevella Will Resign, If..
With the strong call for the massive resignation of national sports association heads, Weightlifting Association of the Philippines president Monico Puentevella on Thursday said that he’s willing to resign from office if everyone decides to step down.
“We will discuss this in the general assembly. Though I have my doubt if this will be done soon as other officials may not agree,” said Puentevella, who is attending the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) General Assembly at Century Park Hotel.
A few days ago, a report quoted Gymnastics Association of the Philippines Cynthia Carrion saying that she’s willing to resign from her position as POC board member if the assembly votes to call for an election. Carrion is also served as 2017 Southeast Asian Games chef de mission of the Philippine delegation.
Earlier, Philippine Sports Commission passed a board resolution supporting the campaign initiative of PSC Commissioner Ramon Fernandez against corruption in Philippine sports and demands that POC to return the Php 27 million financial assistance from the commission for the hosting of the 2005 SEAG.
Former PSC Chairman Dr. Perry Mequi last month led a rally in Manila to demand POC President Peping Cojuangco to step down – though stressed that even if Peping is in the throes of death inside the ICU, he will not resign.
“Only the POC General Assembly can boot him out. While the International Olympic Committee (IOC) limits an officer to one term of 4 years plus another 2 terms but, the POC had their own which perpetuates the incumbents,” Mequi reiterated.*
