CSAV Titans Wins 1st Basketball Championship

It was never expected, it was one step at a time. It all started with a simple dream, just to put up a Basketball team for the school that was established in 2011. They have a simple sports program where they got Coaches and talents to kick start a team that they have today.

Colegio de Sta. Ana de Victorias once gathered a team which others called an “Intramurals” capacity, then they started to get Coaching and started with a program that led to another coach and until they clinched a deal with 7 time Champion Coach Elvis Atinado of the (West Negros – Mustangs) now STI-WNU.

Observers recalled the humble beginnings of the team until they got down very serious and focused on the goal of getting the NOPSSCEA 2017 Championship. All eyes were at CSAV as the 37th NOPSSCEA Season started – given the feel of being dominant and unstoppable, the greater task lies on the team management and coaching staff on how these factors will finally bring home the bacon.

Game 1 is where Gerome Aledron UNO-R Rams squad faced the CSAV Titans led by Elvis Atinado. The STI-WNU gym was jam-packed as the crowd from Victorias and UNO-R trooped to cheer on their respective squad. The composition of the spectators rose by the hundreds as the love of the sports drew Bacolod Basketball fans that went to see the game.

CSAV took game 1 with a run and gun play that caught the Rams flat-footed, Jeric Adorio, Jeffrey Manday and the towering Junior Essakadoualla that opened fast break plays for the Titans. The Rams responded with few runs but was not able to keep in pace with the Titans during the rest of the game.

Game 2 is where the Uno-R Rams led by Patrick Dave Yulo, Stephano Ayuco and Japeth Claridad sparked a 8-0 run that stunned the CSAV Titans where star players that were expected to do the boost for CSAV went off. Adorio and Manday were not able to delivers the goods.

Rams played the high post offense pulling off the center Essakadoualla to stay on top of the key where they can lose the defense off the first dribble and get the open jumpers from Toral, Ayuco and Claridad.

The Titans were not able to recover aside from the poor offensive attacks; the whole coaching staff was stuck in complaining on the officiating side losing their focus on the entire game.

And then came the do-or-die Game last November 17 where another jam-packed crowd trooped to the venue where it could not accommodate everybody since the size of the crowd was expectedly to double.

The Atinado led Titans was fully charged up coming off from a defeat. Then goes the start of the solid performance of CSAV. Opening the offensive attack forced the Rams to call an early time out for re-adjustments. The Rams went to take the lead 10-9 but the Titans regained the control of the game after an alley-hoop play on Essakadoualla where Jeffrey Manday and Jeric Adorio served as the 1-2 punch for CSAV leading the 1st quarter, 25-21.

In the second quarter of play, the Titans sparked another offensive stride 27-21 where the Rams responded to keep in pace with CSAV, but another huge run extended the lead 39-29 and ended the 2nd half with 48-35 lead over the Rams.

The Titans surged expanding the lead 63-43 coming off from triple from Billy Rojo with less than 3 minutes left in the 3rd quarter.

CSAV held an imposing lead with 69-48 lead going into the final quarter and went on to the road to their first ever Nopsscea Basketball Championship title winning by 82-64.

Multi-titled Coach Elvis Atinado says he tank God for the win and dedicate the said championship to the Cruz siblings who have been all out support for the team, Atinado said.

I look forward to winning more titles for CSAV Titans but we will take it a game at a time, Atidano furthered. Team mangers Paolo and Paul Oliver Cruz, this title is a dream come true “ We are speechless and happy”.

Just after the win and the jubilation, spectators and sports observers see that the next season will be a totally different ball game and schools will also begin to think how will they keep in par with what the Titans have become after having to start simple and now being looked upon as the team to beat by the next season.

Will this be a start of another Basketball Dynasty? Surely, the fans will be expecting more since the standard of play, the team support and line up of players was elevated after the birth of the new Basketball Champions – the CSAV Titans.*
