Local News: Urban Poor Group Appeals for Moratorium on Court Ordered Demolitions

Leaders and members of the urban poor organization, the Kalipunan ng mga Damayang Mahihirap (KADAMAY) have demanded that the military, specifically the 303rd IB, not intervene in the scheduled demolition of urban poor dwellings in Purok Himaya, Sagua Banwa in Valladolid town and for the demolition of urban poor communities in Bacolod City and other areas, to temporarily be halted while negotiations specifically, the relocation of houses be carried out in the affected areas.

The demolition scheduled Monday, by the sheriff’s office of several houses in Sagua Banwa Village, in Valladolid town, has been postponed for a month after a series of negotiations carried out by members of the sugar workers, community reports culled by various media outlets and in an interview with Kadamay or urban poor leader Berlita Ante, showed.

Local News: Urban Poor Resists Dismantling of Houses Demolition of Seaside Dwellings Blocked

The demolition of urban poor houses in Brgy. Punta Taytay, did not push through yesterday morning as residents numbering about 50 families, fought back as the demolition team moved in to dismantle their houses.

One person was injured, an assistant of one of the sheriffs who had accompanied the team while rocks flew as residents blocked the demolition team from moving with barricades as one of the houses owned by residents have been touched while the affected residents continued to watch eagle-eyed over their dwellings.

53 families who are facing ejection and demolition were able to put on hold the said order as they have gotten the attention of the City’s Chief Executive Mayor Evelio R. Leonardia to look for possibilities so they will not be economically displaced at Purok Masinulondon, Barangay Pta. Taytay. Residents whose houses are set to be demolished insisted for an onsite development in the adjacent property which the City can purchase and have the people pay for it.

Leaders of the urban poor group, Kadamay-Negros, Kaisahan or the Confederation of Urban Pooor Alliance (KAISAHAN) and the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan-Negros (BAYAN-Negros), stridently denounced what it said was the action of city government officials in facilitating ejection of members of their fellow sector-members, without any justifiable basis and inspite of incurring a huge debt, in their behalf and using them in the process as a justification.
