Sports: Capiz to Host 2013 WVRAA Meet

Capiz province acceded to host the 2013 Western Visayas Regional Athletic (WVRAA) and prevented the Department of Education to resort to a plan of holding the events in "Home-and-Away" format.

This was disclosed recently by Western Visayas Department of Education Regional Director Mildred Garay to officials while Negros Occidental is holding the Provincial Meet or Palarong Panlalawigan at Panaad Park and Sport Stadium here since Sunday until Friday.

A lay leader in Roxas City revealed that one of the four Filipino bishops who received a pallium from Pope Benedict XVI on June 29, was Archbishop Jose Advincula of Capiz. The pallium was given during the concelebrated mass at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome in celebration of the feast of Sts. Peter and Paul.

Local News: Liptospirosis Kills 5 in Capiz

Five patients in Capiz died of liptospirosis per report of the Capiz Epidemiological Surveillance and Response Unit (CESRU). For the period January to June this year, the Unit reported 24 cases of liptospirosis in the whole province, which is a 100% increase compared to last year of the same period.

According to Jeffrey Espiritu, spokesman of the Provincial Health Office, Roxas City tops the record with 6 cases. Dumarao has 5; Dao, Sapian and Panay have 2 cases each; and Dumalag, Maayon, Panitan, Pilar, Pontevedra and Sigma - 1 each.Out of the 24 patients, five died - two from Roxas City, both males aged 26 and 48, a 38-year-old male from Pilar, a 40-year-old female from Pontevedra, and a 36-year-old male from Balasan, Iloilo, who was treated at a hospital in Roxas City.

Some 15,743 senior citizens in Western Visayas were able to avail of P26.6 milllion for their social pension from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Region 6, wherein the highest beneficiaries are from Iloilo followed by Negros Occidental.

Mambusao, CAPIZ - There is no concrete reason or cause yet why Vice Mayor Abel Martinez, 79, of Mambusao, Capiz was shot dead at close range outside his residence on Rizal Street, Mambusao, Capiz, at about 6:00 a.m. yesterday, causing his instantaneous death. PRO 6 Regional Director C/Supt Cipriano Querol, Jr. directed all police units in Panay Island to set up checkpoints and checkpoint operations to intercept the assailant. Mambusao Police Station Chief Pol Insp. Samuel Vipinosa said there is no report of any threat to his life prior to the incident. As of press time, the police has not established yet motive of the killing VM Martinez.

This year’s Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association Meet will be held on March 12-16, 2012 to be hosted by the Province of Negros Occidental.

It was finalized during the Technical Management Conference held at the Governor’s Hall, Provincial Capitol, yesterday, attended by sports heads, coordinators, and Department of Education personnel representing the six provinces of Western Visayas.

It was presided by DepEd Regional Office VI Director, Mildred L. Garay.
