2 SCAA Killed, 2 Captured But Freed Later, 1 Wounded in NPA Attack of Detachment

SAGAY CITY - Two paramilitary men were killed, two abducted but released later and one wounded when alleged members of New People’s Army (NPA) numbering about 50 attacked a paramilitary detachment in Hacienda Erlinda at Sitio Aliwanay, Barangay General Luna here about 5:30 a.m. yesterday.

Police Inspector Adrian James Albaytar, Deputy Police chief of Sagay City PNP said the attack was sudden that the occupants in the hacienda compound owned by newly-elected city councillor of Sagay City Christopher “Atoy” Marañon were caught by surprise.

The said paramilitary is guarding the property of Atoy Marañon and not a detachment put up by the military, said 2Lt. Ma. Revekka Roperos, Civil Military Operation Officer of 303rd Infantry Brigade.

The fatalities were identified as Jose Huyad Pios, and Dionisio Ibañez – both of legal age.

Captured after about 15 minutes fire fights were Alex Garcia, 35 and Joemar Mahilum, 28, both of Sitio Boli in Barangay Malasibog, Escalante City in Negros Occidental, according to Police Chief Inspector Roberto Mansueto, Escalante City OIC police chief who was informed that the two were found in Barangay Paitan after a brief encounter with responding police and military.

Mansueto said that they were turned over to Sagay City PNP.

The identity of the wounded was not available as of press time as he was rushed to a nearby hospital and later transferred to a Bacolod City hospital for treatment.

The attackers divested the paramilitary their assorted firearms namely; three (3) M26, five (5) carbine, one (110 M14, one (1) M79 and other 10 high powered firearms.

The incident was the second to happen in northern Negros Occidental.

Last May 14 also in the morning, three Army soldiers were killed and two others were wounded following a clash with members of the New People’s Army (NPA) in Toboso, Negros Occidental early Saturday morning.

Second Lieutenant Revekka Roperos, 303rd Infantry Brigade public affairs office chief, said the encounter took place in Sitio Carbon, Barangay San Isidro around 6:45 a.m. Saturday.

The fatalities were identified as Private First Class (PFC.) Reggie Taleon of Barangay Bug-ang in Toboso town; PFC. Teddy Alcallaga, and PFC. Ramel Perasol, both married in Escalante City. Alcallaga and Perasol are from Iloilo province. They are members of Alpha Company of the 62nd Infantry Battalion with headquarters at Barangay San Isidro in Toboso, a kilometer away from their headquarters when ambushed.

They are on foot patrol to return to their headquarters.

Wounded were Corporal Rosevil Villacampa of Zamboanga City and the team leader and PFC Jethro Niervo of Calinog, Iloilo.

The troopers were checking reports on the presence of armed men who were extorting food from residents of San Isidro village, when they encountered about 10 NPA rebels.

A 15-minute fire fight ensued, killing three soldiers and wounding two others.*
