Lightning Kills 2, Hurts 5
CADIZ CITY - Two persons harvesting sugarcane were killed while five others were injured when hit by lightning past 11 yesterday morning in Hacienda Elvira in Barangay Andres Bonifacio, a mountainous barangay in this city.
Killed was 30-year-old Willy Barredo “Alias Tonette” and 27-year-old Juvy Jumawan, both single and residents of the barangay.
Their colleague cane cutters who also sustained burns but survived, were 18-yr.-old Mark Supista “Alias Nonoy”, 30-yr.-old Cristobal Magbanua, 44-yr.-old Silverio Lobrico and 18-yr.-old son Danny Lobrico; and his nephew 20-yr.-old Jeffrey Lobrico.
Barredo and Jumawan were declared dead on arrival at the Cadiz District Hospital here.
The surviving victims were brought either to the Cadiz district hospital or at the Doña Corazon Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital in Bacolod.
Relatives of the victims told authorities they were cutting sugarcane when the sky went dark and light rains fell, followed by lightning and thunder that struck the truck under which they were seeking shelter.
Cadiz City PNP and the city’s REACT Rescue team went to the area to assist the victims.*
