‘Cops Successful in Drive vs. Cyber Criminals’

Bacolod City Police Office (BCPO) operatives, in partnership with other agencies, are successful in their operations against cyber crime perpetrators, according to Bacolod Police Chief, Supt. Jack Wanky.

Wanky said, another suspect victimizing minors have been arrested and cases were filed before the court last Friday.

The suspect is presently detained at the Police Station 4.

The seven minor victims are presently at the office of the Department of Social Welfare Services & Development (DSWD) in the city, for disposition, whether to bring them back to their parents, or it is DSWD that will take care of them.

The entrapment operation resulted to the rescue of 7 minors and one adult being victimized through cyber network.

The operation was the result of a long monitoring by Bacolod City Police Office (BCPO) and Visayas Cyber intelligence unit based in Camp Crame, with the Children Protection Center and NGOs supporting the campaign.

Wanky also said, Bacolod is one of the highly urbanized cities, so crimes like this are always present.

Causes of cyber crime proliferation are, poverty - because even parents of minors give in to the demand of the suspects in exchange for certain amounts of money, using the internet for sexual abuse to the minors;

The victims and their parents are not aware that they are being abused through the internet; and the use of cellphones by showing the sex organ or having sexual activity over the internet.

The suspect’s strategy is by offering from P3,000 and above, which is already something to the indigent families.

Wanky is urging the barangay officials and the community to report to the police activities like this because it is always done secretly and the suspect is incognito.

Wanky said during a press conference at the City Hall, that they will work in partnership with the barangay councils for the protection of children and women.*(Edith B. Colmo)
