Panes Wins Manchess Player of the Year Title
Third seed Frances Glen Panes recorded 17 match points after seven rounds to win the 2017 Player of the Year title on December 27 during the Mansilingan Chess (ManChess) Society Championships at the ManChess training center in Mansilingan, Bacolod City.

Panes secured 5 wins against the best local candidate and club masters but lower seeds Josevito Tapulgo and Xavier Verdun almost pulled off an upset with their match ended in draw.
Eventual 2nd placer fourth seed Eric Abanco made a 5-game winning streak until Panes defeated Abanco in the penultimate round and struggled in his last game against Aguedo Docase to finish with 15 MP.
Top seed Ellan Asuela finished 3rd place with 13 MP following his 4 wins, a draw against Raymund dela Pena, and pair of losses - Panes & Abanco.
Completing the ranking: 4th placer Verdun with 11, 5th placer Docase with 9, 6th placer Tapulgo with 7, and Dela Peña brothers - Raymund & Edgar placed 7th and 8th place, respectively.
In the side event, Christian Pelione won the kiddies division title followed by Regnault Jessie June Solquillo, Eliza Mae Toremoro, and Jamelin Ruth Lim.
According to ManChess president Engr Nestor Cena, they have lined up various activities for 2018 particularly in the grassroots level. “There will be another ManChess grand finals for this year, not just in the Open division, but also in the kiddies group.”
