Bacolod Eyes to Build B-Ball Stadium Soon
Bacolod City Mayor Monico Puentevella confirmed news that Bacolod is set to build a basketball stadium as part of the country’s bid to host the 2019 Fédération Internationale de Basketball (FIBA) World Cup of Basketball.
MOP and MVP
Puentevella said that they will be presenting the plan to the FIBA technical group who are coming in the end of this month.
Early this week, Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas executive Director Sonny Barrios was quoted over Interaksyon.com that one of the crucial requirements for hosting the FIBA World Cup is to have multiple venues suitable to stage the games.
Barrios also stated that as the Philippines among the six countries bidding for the World Cup hosting, a US-based group is currently in talks with Solaire for establishing a new FIBA-standard facility in Metro Manila.
The SBP official, likewise, disclosed that two more stadiums will be built in Cebu and Bacolod.
Joining Philippines in the hosting bid are China, Qatar, Turkey, France and Germany.
Given that the Philippines gets the nod to host this prestigious event, the country will also earn an automatic spot in the World Cup.
It was recalled that the Philippine squad made huge impact in last year’s competition in Spain despite closing the tournament with a lone 81-79 victory over Senegal.
And, though they failed to advance in the tournament’s Round of 16, the Filipinos sent a strong message to the basketball world following its return after 36 years.
During that stint, the Philippines suffered heartbreaking defeats against the world’s best - Croatia (81-78, OT), Argentina (85-81), and Puerto Rico (77-73).* (JGToga)
