3 Killed in highway collision
A tricycle driver, teacher and student were all killed in a road mishap around 5:50 p.m. when the tricycle was bumped by a speeding passenger jeep along the national highway of Mabinay Road in Barangay 9, Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental.
Police Superintendent Rhea Santos, Kabankalan PNP chief identified the victims as Edgar Fernandez Capinig, 56, married, native of Masbate and presently residing at Barangay 5, Kabankalan, driver of Bajaj Kawasaki tricycle; Liezel Garzula, 41, married, resident of Barangay Camingawan, teacher at Central Philippine State University and Roselle Bartolome, 20, single, of Barangay Tampalon, Kabankalan.
The driver of Fuso utility vehicle or passenger jeep was identified as Fernando De la Cruz Mahilum, 35, of Rojas Street, Barangay Camingawan.
Police investigation disclosed that the passenger jeep and the tricycle were running the same way northbound and the passenger jeep overtook another vehicle on the right side instead of the left causing it to bump the tricycle that made a left turn to cross the other side of the road going to Villa Concha Subdivision.
The passengers reportedly cautioned the driver to slow down and be careful. He did not heed and overtook another vehicle.
Due to the impact, the tricycle driver was thrown away while the two passengers were pinned inside. The victims were rushed to Lorenzo Zayco District Hospital but was declared dead on arrival by Dr. Dexter John Lopez.
The driver of the passenger jeep voluntarily surrendered to authorities.
Police conducted investigation of the case and detained the driver who is facing reckless imprudence resulting to multiple homicide.*(Cyrus M. Garde)
