The Bacolod City Treasurer’s Office – Land Tax Division posted big collections of Real Property Taxes (RPT) per day on the last week of December 2017, according to local treasury operations officer Arlene Memoria.
On Dec. 29 alone, the Land Tax Division collected P60 million in RPT, which is the biggest single-day collection for the first time ever, Memoria said.
The next biggest collection is P42 million on Dec. 31; P33 million—Dec. 26; P20 million—Dec. 28; P13 million—Dec. 30; P9 million—Dec. 27.
Memoria said these collections are advance payment for 2018 RPT.
An activist group criticized government officials for insisting that the new tax imposition, the Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion (TRAIN) will have “minimal and temporary” effects on the prices of commodities and shall benefit the rich and poor alike.
“The confidence of the business community has been restored, therefore the business friendly image of Bacolod City is also restored.”
Thus said Bacolod Mayor Evelio Leonardia in a radio interview yesterday, adding that the chain reaction of such confidence “can not be underestimated”.
Leonardia said, in the first year of his administration upon returning to city hall, the city has become a model city in the country “which could be aligned to the levels of Manila and Makati”.
A sugarcane farm worker was hacked dead by his fellow worker late Friday night in Hacienda Conchita in Barangay Camang-Camang in Isabela town.
Police Chief Inspector Ruben Pajarito, Isabela PNP OIC police chief identified the victim as Rene Grande Magdaluyo, 37, married, of Barangay Amin in the town.
He sustained hacked wounds on his neck and died on the spot.
Police identified the suspect as Ricen Yanson Estoya, 20, single, his colleague, also of the barangay.
Two persons were found dead Friday - one in the middle of a sugarcane field in Hacienda Alipion in Barangay Lalagsan, La Castellana, and the other one in Purok Mainogyunon in Barangay Napoles, in Bago City.
In La Castellana, Police Chief Inspector Irma Teoxon, OIC police chief , identified the victim as Rodelio Dalgos, 38, yrs. old, laborer, single and resident of Brgy, Lalagsan.
He was found by farm workers Nestor Gilua Lauren and Ernesto Batansila Estimado, both of legal age and also of Barangay Lalagsan about 3PM.
A total of 80 rebels heeded the repeated calls of Negros Occidental Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr., since he became governor, to abandon the armed struggle.
Speaking during the centennial celebration of the La Castellana town Friday morning, Maranon said the former rebels are now enjoying the assistance extended to them by the provincial government of Negros Occidental, aside from the national government program under Comprehensive Local Integration Program (CLIP).
“Due to lack of merit,” the Court of Appeals (CA) denied the Motion for Reconsideration (MR) of the Ombudsman against Bacolod City Mayor Evelio Leonardia, Atty. Goldwyn Nifras, Luzviminda Treyes, Eduardo Ravena, Melvin Recabar, Nelson Sedillo, Belly Aguillon, Aladino Agbones and Jaries Ebenizer Encabo who were earlier dismissed by the Ombudsman’s Public Assistance and Corruption Prevention Office.
The case stemmed from the alleged overpriced furniture and fixtures purchases for the Bacolod City Government Center.
A total of 1,005,280 foreign tourists visited Western Visayas or Region 6 in 2017, a partial report of the Department of Tourism (DOT) regional office showed.
The province of Aklan topped the list with the most number of foreign tourists at 898,914 due to Boracay, followed by Bacolod City with 69,337.
It also showed that Iloilo City recorded 21,278 foreign visitors; Negros Occidental, 4,681; Antique, 4,072; Guimaras, 2,968; Iloilo province, 2,162; and Capiz, 1,868.

A policeman assigned at Bacolod City Police Office (BCPO) Station 5 (Granada) was shot dead, while another one was wounded, late Saturday afternoon at Canonoy Beach Resort in Barangay Gargato in Hinigaran.
Killed was PO2 Britches “Monggol” Lapus Talapiero, 36, member of the PNP Class “Masikap” assigned at BCPO, a resident of Stone Heaven Subdivision in Barangay Granada, Bacolod.
Talapiero sustained a gunshot wound on his back. He was rushed to the Hinigaran Medical Clinic but was declared dead on arrival by Dr. Jansen Vergara.
