STI-WNU Gymnasium was in full house as Bacolod Volleyball fans swarmed to see the games between invited teams from Manila, Ateneo Blue Eagles and Banko Perlas Spikers last August 21. Event Organizers led by Carmela Arcolas-Gamboa received a lot to ticket reservations even before the tickets have gone out for printing and sales. “Bacolod was crazy over the games and has a strong following in Volleyball”, Gamboa added.

Spokesperson from the Provincial Disaster Management Office (PDMO) who prefer anonymity said, residents of Sipalay City and the Municipality of Hinobaan need not worry about the series of earthquakes in their areas.

Actually, PDMO reports show that there were ten earthquakes recorded in Negros Occidental this August; seven in Hinobaan, two in Sipalay City and one in Toboso. The latest was on August 18 at 8:30 pm in Toboso, the rest are in Sipalay and Hinobaan, all at 4.4 magnitude. There was no damage or casualty.*( Edith B. Colmo)

Various community sectors from Barangay Granada got their chance to speak out their concerns during a recent Kumpas Barangay or ‘hinun-anon’ held at the Barangay Hall.

Spearheaded by the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) with its partners Department of Trade & Industry (DTI), Department of Social Service & Development (DSSD) and Brgy. Granada, local sectoral representatives aired their problems with Brgy. Captain Alfredo Talimodao Jr. and concerned agencies present answering issues hurled.

Twenty barangays from the four local government units (LGUs) of Negros Occidental received a total of P5,950,000 worth of projects from the Provincial Government of Negros Occidental, Tuesday.

Starting yesterday, Tuesday, August 22, traffic at Magsaysay Avenue-Araneta Streets, Bacolod City was back to normal, according to Pol. Supt. Luisito Acebuche, head, Bacolod Traffic Authority Office (BTAO). This is because the office of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has not requested for extension of road closure.

As of this weekend, the Peoples Law Enforcement Board (PLEB) of Bacolod City had dismissed 10 cases already mostly involving policemen. Chaired by Bacolod Councilor Ricardo Tan, other members of the PLEB are Granada Barangay Captain Alfredo Talimodao Jr. representing the barangay, Jovem Entila – Integrated Bar of the Philippines-Negros Occidental Chapter, former councilor Celia Flor – women sector, and Antonio Te - private sector.

 A senior citizen died in a road mishap along Bacolod-Silay Access Road at the vicinity of Barangay Zone 15, Talisay City around 5:10 p.m. Monday.

The victim was identified as Edgardo Gomez Billones, 63, married, temporarily residing at Fortuna Subdivision, Silay City, Negros Occidental.

Billones, driving a Rusi motorcycle, tried to overtake another vehicle but slipped and fell to the cemented road and skidded towards the oncoming Toyota Revo driven by Ronnie Buenafe Arosa, 20, single, of Esmeralda Dos, Barangay San Fernando, Talisay City.

After submitting to PNP higher headquarters in Camp Crame the accomplishment report of Bacolod City Police Office, that included series of arrest of persons engaged in illegal drugs, Pol Sr. Supt Jack Wanky, BCPO Director, received a directive from the higher officers reportedly telling him to focus on high value targets particularly those engaged in the illegal drugs. The said directive also advised him not to dwell so much on street level targets (SLT), instead focus on HVT considering the strength of proliferation of illegal drugs in the city.

A drug suspect was collared by police operatives in Purok Tangigue, Barangay 1 around 8:30 p.m. Monday.

Police Chief Inspector Benedicto Villarias, Police Station 2 chief identified the suspect as Herman Javelosa Salvideo, 58, “Alias Intsik,” married, of the place.

Confiscated from him was (1) one small heat sealed transparent plastic sachet with suspected shabu as buy-bust item in exchange to P200 marked money; two more elongated heat sealed suspected shabu with estimated street value of P 2,000.00.

He is detained at Police Station 2.

Due to numerous complaints from the public, the Sangguniang Panlungsod of Bacolod City approved the resolution of Councilor Bart Orola in Wednesday’s August 15 regular session, that requests the City Health Office and the Permits and Licensing Division of the Bacolod City through the Office of the City Mayor, to inspect all water refilling business establishments in the city.
