Army, Himamaylan LGU Construct Hanging Bridge

A steel hanging bridge will soon connect the sitios in Brgy. Mahalang, Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental. A joint undertaking of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the local government of Himamaylan City, the project broke ground the other day. The steel hanging bridge is located at Sitio Suba Su-ay, Mahalang, measures 50 meters long, and costs P1.5 million.

According to LtCol. Meliton Reyes, Jr., commanding officer of 542 Engineering Construction Battalion, the hanging bridge will connect Sitio Suba Su-ay to Sitio Kanluki, Unit 1, Kantupa, Buyoron, Palasanan, Basak, Alulong all of Brgy. Mahalang.

LtC Reyes also said, the project is funded by the City Government of Himamaylan and will be implemented by the AFP which was represented by the 542nd Engineer Construction (Pathfinder) Battalion. The collaboration was formalized through Project Partnership Agreement (PPA) duly signed by LtC Meliton C. Reyes PA, and the City Government under the stewardship of Mayor Agustin Ernesto G. Bascon on August 18, 2017. The project is expected to be completed on December this year.

During the groundbreaking ceremony, Engineer Rodney Miguel, Assistant City Engineer, representing Mayor Bascon encouraged the beneficiaries to help during the construction of the project in order to instill a sense of ownership among them. LtC Arnel B. Cabugon PA, Commanding Officer, 3CMOBn, representing the 3rd Infantry Division expressed gratitude to the City Government of Himamaylan for tapping the services of the 542ECB as its key partner agency in its development efforts. He emphasized that this endeavor is the essence of the AFP’s Development Support and Security Plan “Kapayapaan”.

On the other hand, LTC Reyes stressed that the project is a symbol of peace and development dedicated to the people of Mahalang. “This is just the first of many projects to be implemented under our collaboration with the LGU,” LTC Reyes added.

Attending the groundbreaking ceremony were residents of Barangay Mahalang headed by Chairperson Aileen Vasquez, Personnel of 1st Negros Island Geographic Battalion led by Major Sampurano and several employees of Himamaylan LGUs.

Majority of the people living in the project area are farm workers and belong to the marginal sector of the society, whose livelihood is farming in the sugarcane land like corn, rice and vegetables. Brgy. Mahalang is approximately 14 kilometers away from the City Proper.

The Steel Hanging Bridge will provide solution to the problem of people, as the only access road from the seven sitios to Mahalang proper is passing through the overflow bridge which is not passable when rain occurs, therefore hampers their livelihood and education of the youths. *( Edith B.Colmo)
