Land Conflict in Cauayan Leads to Killing
A farmer was killed and two others injured when they were stabbed by unidentified suspects in Purok 2, Barangay Abaca, Cauayan town in Negros Occidental Monday.
Police Chief Inspector Gary Alan Resuma, Cauayan PNP OIC chief identified the victim as Eduardo Layan, Jr., of legal age, also of the place. He sustained stab wounds on his stomach caused by a sharp and long bolo locally known as “talibong”.
Earlier, successive gunshots were heard from outside the nipa hut where the victims Rene Boy and Ronilo Sabanal, both of legal age, and residents of the place, were sleeping after a day’s work in the farm.
A relative shouted to them to hide, but the victim Eduardo Layan, Jr. was left inside still sleeping.
The suspects came near the nipa hut and reportedly stabbed the sleeping victim with a bolo.
It was learned that the crime was perpetrated due to land conflict. The land was leased to another family by the father of Rene Boy and Ronilo Sabanal and went to Mindanao. When the older Sabanal died, the younger Sabanal went home and asked that the piece of land be returned to them but they refused.
It resulted to court litigations.
Police disclosed that four suspects have been arrested and charged with murder and frustrated murder in court.
The suspects were identified as Wilfredo Sabanal, a cousin; Joel and Ronel Cardiente and Jovito Almania. They are detained at Cauayan PNP.*(CMGarde)
