32 NIR Offices Packing Up

Looks and sounds sadder.

The 32 regional offices of national agencies supposedly operating in the Negros Island Region or Region 18 started packing up yesterday, following President Rodrigo Roa Duterte’s dismantling of the one-island NIR.

These regional offices are situated in Bacolod City, Negros Occidental and in Dumaguete City in Negros Oriental.

Fourteen regional offices are in Bacolod and 16 in Dumaguete.

According to Dr. Marlyn Sanogal of the Technical Working Group for NIR, the regional office of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) will be the one that will administer the dismantling of NIR regional offices under its umbrella, like the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), Philippine National Police (PNP), Bureau of Jail Management (BJMP), and others.

Sanogal also said those belonging to Negros Occidental will go back to Western Visayas or Region 6 based in Iloilo City, while those in Negros Oriental will return to Central Visayas or Region 7 based in Cebu City.

The Police Regional Office 18 (PRO 18) is still waiting for the order from its national headquarters in Camp Crame for its pull out.

Police Supt. Amelyn Vargas, PIO, said the uniformed personnel assigned at PRO 18 coming from Negros Occidental Provincial Police Office (NOPPO) and Bacolod City Police Office (BCPO) will go back to their units.

The fate of the non-uniformed personnel will depend on the local government units (LGUs) because they are paid by the local governments of Negros Occidental and Bacolod City as counterparts of the LGUs to the PRO 18 operations.

The Commission on Election (COMELEC) did not opene a regional office in the NIR since its operations have remained under Region 6.*(Edith B. Colmo)
