Lupon Tagapamayapa Member Shot Dead
A member of Barangay Lupon Tagapamayapa from Mina-otoc, a hinterland barangay of Calatrava town was shot dead around 9:00 p.m. Sunday, August 5, at their residence in Sitio Putingtubig, Barangay Mina-otoc, Calatrava, Negros Occidental.
Police chief inspector John Joel Batusbatusan, Calatrava PNP chief identified the victim as Efraim “Boy” Gubat, 70, married, who also worked as a surveyor.
He sustained multiple gunshot wounds in the body and died on the spot.
According to witnesses, about 10 armed men shot the victim, while six of them served as lookout.
Police initial report disclosed, he was awakened by the armed men who allegedly tried to borrow utensils to cook their food, but shot him several times when he opened the door.
The victim was allegedly a surveyor of most properties of Rodolfo “Bebe” Lumayno, the sugar planter killed by New People’s Army (NPA) in Barangay Minapasok, Calatrava two months ago.
Police authorities are still investigating the incident to determine motive of the killing.*(Cyrus M. Garde)
