MONTELIBANOS’ WORLD WAR II HIDEOUT. Hidden in the thick forest cover above Barangay Pandanon in Don Salvador Benedicto town, Negros Occidental, accessible
only through rivers, giant rocks and punishing climb with both hands and feet
hugging the sometimes loose mountainsides — is the former Mountain "hideout and
temporary home" of the late Negros Island Governor Alfredo "Peding" Montelibano
Sr. during the Japanese invasion and the war years. Tyo Peding later became
Bacolod’s first city mayor in 1938. Mediamen Arman Toga (Negros Daily Bulletin
editor and Negros Press Club president), 4th from left, and broadcaster Boy
Ciocon (DYAF Veritas and NPC treasurer), 2nd from left, spent some hours
yesterday, Sunday to tackle the difficult and risky terrains to reach the "mini
bunker" beside a river. With them was Pandanon kagawad Elmo Amit, 3rd from left,
and some guides, who said that as far as they can remember, yesterday was the
first time media people reached the area.* (READ THE ENTIRE STORY AND SEE MORE
