Opinion: Typhoon Yolanda Frightening
NO DEFENSE AGAINST CALAMITIES. Typhoon Yolanda is howling like a raging bull and even more so a monster of frightening proportions as we write this piece. This is Friday, November 8 and as we write this, the typhoon has created a swath practically in the whole country, to include all provinces in Western, Eastern and Central Visayas. And also as we write this, a transistor radio nearby has reported that in provinces in nearby Panay Island, three people have already died because of the typhoon, which statistics show, is the number three strongest typhoon in years to hit the Philippines. In landfalls, it is, however, the world’s strongest throughout history tis’ said.
All planes, ships, ferry boats schedule and land trips have even been cancelled. Almost all cities, towns and the provincial government itself have declared a forced and preemptive evacuation, to prelude, said President Benigno Simeon Aquino III the occurrence of casualties and fatalities. But this is impossible as the initial reports of fatalities have shown.
As the time for the announcement that the typhoon would show its full strength at 2p.m. yet, it appears that it is already doing havoc before this when it is yet 30 minutes past 12 p.m.
There are also indications that the typhoon is affecting or has affected the whole of Negros Island and not just a few provinces.
A report further said three or four more typhoons are projected to rampage in the country, within the period of November to December.
THE HOWLING GETS STRONGER. As we continue writing we have to stop momentarily as we have to be on alert because of trees around us which we ourselves have planted and which might be uprooted and which could do damage. A recent small typhoon but which generated a tornado or whirlwind had uprooted even a clump of Japanese bamboos in our yard. This one’s a lady named Yolanda, which from all indications is three times stronger and which is causing frayed nerves.
COUNTRY’S MISFORTUNE. It is, indeed, the country’s misfortune that it lies in the Pacific Ocean typhoon belt. This has set us to thinking that we are possibly the country in the whole world which is visited by the most number of typhoons. Every month, the frequency of typhoons seems to be increasing, a reality which results in the loss of lives and destruction of properties.
With the typhoon hitting nationwide, the damage to properties and lives lost could be several times greater. Only the billions of pesos stolen by such thieves as Janet Lim-Napoles and corrupt-ridden government officials is bigger and more harmful to the interests of the Filipino people.
And it had been coincidence that a day earlier, Janet Lim-Napoles, the "best and the biggest" civilian crook of them all had testified in the Senate Committee hearing and who floored millions of her countrymen because of her predictable tactic of not saying or betraying anything, even protecting her fellow conspirators in the Senate and Congress by seemingly not identifying all of them. One would wish that the Tulfo brothers’ constant suggestions that fiends like these deserve the firing squad was a fate Lim-Napoles should be meted out.
THEY ALL AGREE! Personnel in a fastfood chain-cum fastfood refreshment parlor all agreed what we have written about Janet Lim-Napoles. The fastfood chain’s employees are Marjorie Carlas, Shenkina Lamig, Krystal Saron, Gretchen Tancinco and Jenelyn Lanasa. The fastfood chain is located just a block away from our home in Helvetia Heights Subdivision.
The five also are voracious readers of the Negros Daily Bulletin. Shenkina is a townmate of our handsome news delivery boy who always pretends he is not married. But beware, he has more than half-a-dozen offsprings regardless of his Vicki Belo-like smooth face and young-looking skin. His name is Johnny Lava, no relation to Jesus Lava of HMB-Hukbalahap Fame.
Tell you me. But, indeed!*
