Sports: NOPSSCEA Board Meeting Set Today

To make a successful staging of this year’s Negros Occidental Private Schools Sports, Cultural and Educational Association, the Boards are set to meet today at the latter’s office located at Panaad Park Stadium in Barangay Mansilingan, Bacolod City.

Expected to be taken in the meeting is the proposed budget in staging this year’s tournament with fourteen sports disciplines to be contested. Each sport disciplines have its tournament managers who are not connected with any NOPSSCEA member schools but with the knowledge of running every event they were assigned and to exhort fair play among participating schools.

The Sports Task Force has encouraged for a minimum of four teams to participate in every event in order to have a competitive sports tournament.

Anthony Carlo Agustin, newly designated NOPSSCEA Sports chairman said, fourteen sports disciplines will be contested; Arnis, athletics, badminton, basketball, chess, football, karatedo, lawn tennis, sepak takraw, swimming, taekwondo, table tennis, volleyball and beach volleyball.

Arnis will be played in elementary and secondary boys and girls; and collegiate men and women. Athletics in the 10-under elementary and secondary boys and girls and collegiate men and women; badminton for elementary and secondary boys and girls and collegiate men and women; basketball in 10-under, elementary, aspirants boys and secondary boys and girls and collegiate men and women; chess on all levels except the aspirants; football on all levels; karatedo, lawn tennis, swimming and table tennis on all levels except the 10-under and aspirants; sepak takraw for secondary boys and collegiate men; and beach volleyball for secondary girls and boys and collegiate men and women.

Deadline of submission of entries will be on August 25 to 30 and the screening of documents on August 31, 2012. However, the start of regular season will be on September 18 with the formal opening on yet specified venue.

Agustin said they need to start early to allow this year’s NOPSSCEA champion to join the Philippine Collegiate Championship League set in Dumaguete on October 14 to 16.

Shooting for its 14th NOPSSCEA collegiate basketball crown are the WNU Mustangs with last year’s runner-up, University of St. La Salle Stingers getting ready to grab the title this year. Other teams are University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos Rams and Colegio San Agustin Eagles. These teams will engage in a Pre-NOPSSCEA tournament on August 10, 11 and 12, 2012 at the West Negros University gym.*
