Sports: Neg Occ LGUs Urged to Support 2013 Palaro Bids
After the province’s Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) unanimously approved a resolution strongly supporting the Negros Occidental bid for 2013 Palarong Pambansa, the other Local Government Units (LGUs) are urging to support the same in a legislative council.
This was brought up by 3rd District Provincial board member Patrick Lacson in support of the resolution proposed by the Committee on Youth and Sports headed by Sangguniang Kabataan provincial chairman Board Member Thea Marie Dino.
The said approved resolution will be endorsed to Department of Education (DepEd)
Secretary Armin Luistro for consideration and appropriate action.
Lacson said it is high time for the province to showcase its world class sports
facilities through the biggest school-based competition among elementary and
high school students in the country, the Palarong Pambansa.
DepEd Western Visayas director Mildred Garay had said she is 90 percent sure that Negros Occidental will win the bid to host next year’s games with only Dumaguete City as the remaining rival for the hosting after Cebu City reportedly withdrew.
The bid also got the support of Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. and the mayors of the
cities of Silay, Talisay, Bacolod, Bago and the town of Murcia.
The local officials gave their pledge of commitment to allow the DepEd to use
the facilities in their areas as venue and billeting centers should Negros
Occidental wins the bid.
In last Palarong Pambansa held in Lingayen, Pangasinan, Western Visayas placed
runner up behind perennial champion National Capital Region.* (CMGarde)
