Sports: Negros Bids for 2013 Palaro! About 100 Negros, Iloilo DepEd Officials to Meet Today
About 100 officials from the Department of Education (DepEd) in Western Visayas will meet today at Pavillon Hotel to help fortify Negros’ bid for the 2013 Palarong Pambansa.
These officials will be led by DepEd Regional Director Mildred Garay to evaluate and re-assist all the needed requirements for hosting next year’s Palarong Pambansa at Panaad Park and Sports Stadium in Barangay Mansilingan, Bacolod City.
They will insure that the hosting of 2013 Palarong Pambansa will be won by Negros Occidental with its closest rival Cebu City is also bidding to host the grassroots annual sports conclave.
Negros Occidental already hosted four Palarong Pambansa, two of which were held at Panaad Park- the 1998 and 2000 Centennial Palaro. The two others were in 1974 and 1979 at Paglaum Sports Complex.
As initial task for these officials, some of them already identified the billeting centers.
Negros Occidental Governor Alfredo G. Marañon is pushing the hosting next year of Palarong Pambansa and even got the assurance from DepEd Secretary Bro. Armin Luistro last year. Negros Occidental also has an edge over other aspirants due to the new guidelines in hosting the Palarong Pambansa, and that is to have ensured venues for various sports disciplines.
Cebu City is also bidding to host the event and boasts of their venue like Abellana Sports Complex in downtown Cebu renamed as Cebu City Sports Complex. They hosted the event in 1994.
Negros Occidental already has facilities that can cater to about 16 sports disciplines and billeting centers just a few minutes ride from the venue, or even a walking distance for 17 regional delegations throughout the country.
Garay already met with Gov. Alfredo G. Marañon, Jr. regarding the bidding.*
