Diminutive Peewee Demonteverde hit five triples in the final quarter to lift Sun Cellular over Akasya Grill, 85-84, in the ongoing 1st PROBAC/LNA7 Invitational Basketball Tournament played at the West Negros University gym Tuesday night.

Sun played a big first half game with a 43-32 lead behind Toto Torre’s 14 points in the opening quarter assisted by Dave Dokto and JR Fernandez, both hitting for 10 and 8 points respectively in the second period.

However, Akasya threatened Sun in the third with a sizzling, 27-5 blast on Paolo Diaz’ 13 points and Japhet Cua’s 8 points to post a 59-48 tally at the end of the period.

Trailing a 16-point deficit at the start of the final period, Demonteverde alongside Patric Echarri and Fernandez worked hard for the needed points, which later paid off.

Sun launched a total of seven treys in this quarter to outpoint Akasya at the buzzer, despite the 10-point output of Akasya ace center Mark Kong.

Demonteverde anchored Sun Cellular’s last quarter run with 22 points, Fernandez added 16, Torre had 14, Echarri with 13 and Dokto with 10 points.

Diaz led Akasya with 19 points while Kong had 15, Cua 8, while Hans Schulze and Christer Isulat managed with 6 points apiece.* (CMGarde)
