Sports: Cong. Doc Tony Golez Cites Miami Heat Fil-Am Coach Erik Spoelstra
June 25, 2012, House of Representatives, Congressman Anthony Rolando "Doc Tony" T. Golez, Jr. of the Lone District of Bacolod City filed House Resolution No. 2515, entitled ""A RESOLUTION CONGRATULATING AND COMMEN-DING MIAMI HEAT FILIPINO-AMERCIAN COACH ERIK SPOELSTRA FOR BECOMING THE FIRST-EVER COACH WITH FILIPINO/ASIAN LINEAGE TO LEAD A TEAM TO A NATIONAL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION CHAMPIONSHIP".
Last June 22, 2012, the Miami Heat won the championship in the 2012 National Basketball Association (NBA) Finals by defeating the Oklahoma Thunder. The Miami Heat was lead by its big three of Lebron James, Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh and their head coach, Filipino-American, Erik Spoelstra, who traces his roots in the province of Laguna.
Cong. Doc Tony cited that Erik Spoelstra is regarded as the first-ever head coach of an NBA team with Asian/Filipino heritage. Cong. Doc Tony said that: "Erik Spoelstra is one proud Filipino, you can see this with his actions and statements. He has visited the Philippines several times and even proudly proclaims his admiration with fellow Filipino achiever, Cong. Manny Pacquaio. The entire country should be thankful and honored with the achievements of Miami Heat Head Coach Erik Spoelstra".
The House of Representatives has traditionally adopted Resolutions commending and congratulating achievements of Filipinos or those with Filipino roots for bringing honor and pride to the Philippines. "The Bacolodnons are smart and very appreciative of Filipinos who have made their mark in the world stage. As Bacolod City Representative, I consistently have filed Resolutions, citing achievements of Filipinos in the the international platform, to reflect the Bacolodnons’ acumen and honor. Coach Erik Spoelstra’s achievements can be used as a motivation for all Filipinos to work hard and excel at their chosen fields." added Cong. Doc Tony.
Coach Erik Spoelstra’s father is American Jon Spoelstra and his mother is Elisa Celino of San Pablo, Laguna. Coach Erik Spoelstra has visited the Philippines several times and has shared his knowledge in basketball by conducting basketball clinics.*
