Local news: Trillanes, Binay Guest Speakers Independence, 74th Charter Day Celebrations in City
Two national dignitaries will fly in to Bacolod in a week, as guest speakers during two big events here.
The famous Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV will be guest speaker for the 114th Philippine Independence Day celebration on June 12, while Vice president Jejomar Binay is guest speaker on the 74th Charter Day celebration of Bacolod City on June 18.
Councilor Em Ang, chair of the celebrations said, Sen. Trillanes has confirmed the invitation of the city government as guest speaker on June 12.
The Independence Day celebration is the kick off activity to the 74th Charter Day Anniversary of Bacolod on June 18.
Themed "Pananagutan ng Bayan Para sa Tuwid na Daan," the Independence Day celebration will start with flag raising and wreath-laying at the Bacolod Public Plaza, followed with a program at the BAYS Center. There is also essay writing contest at the Robinson’s Place regarding the Independence Day Celebration, Councilor Ang said. The city has alloted P1 million for the Independence day celebration activities. For the charter day affair, a 30-minute grand fireworks display will cap the week long celebration on June 18.

Ang also disclosed that the new feature of the charter day celebration includes a weeklong trade fair and exhibit at the government center fountain area where products of the 61 barangays of Bacolod will be displayed. Then the carnival will be held at the back of the government center grounds.
There will be weeklong photo exhibit about the history of Bacolod at SM City-Bacolod and Robinson’s Place Bacolod, while the jobs fair will be held on June 15 to 16 at Robinson’s Place. Butch Gerasmo of the City Tourism Office said, some 150 beer drinking kiosks will be rented out at P1,200 at the government center grounds from June 12 to 18.
Adding impetus to the Charter Day celebration on June 18, is the signing of sisterhood pact by officials of Bacolod City and Makati, Ang said.
The Sangguniang Panlungsod of Bacolod has authorized Mayor Evelio Leonardia to sign the sisterhood pact in behalf of Bacolod City government, while Makati Mayor Jejomar Erwin Binay, will be the signatory for Makati City. Another highlight of the week long Charter Day activities is the recognition of outstanding Bacolodnons who have greatly contributed to the welfare of their constituents. The Ang Banwahanon Awards night will be held June 17 at the government center lobby. According to Alfonso Federez, who represented Councilor Homer Bais, chair,Banwahanon Awards, they have six nominees for the Ang Banwahanon Awards but could not reveal their names yet since the selection committee will have their final meeting on Friday. P1.4 million was set aside for the Charter Day celebration. But, Ang said, because of the meager budget, most of the events are private-public partnership.
Ang also said, a marching band will perform at 1 p.m. on June 18 to be followed by dance festival showdown to be participated in by all winners in the barangay level competition, through the dance parade or dance competitions conducted in their respective areas. 10 barangays have signified to join the dance festival showdown.
"We should come and celebrate, and be proud of our history," Ang likewise said.
