Sports: Nietes Ready to Beat Salguero
Reigning World Boxing Organization light flyweight champion Donnie "Ahas" Nietes (29 16KOs-1-3) is ready to beat defend is title against former world champion Felipe Salguero (16 11KOs-2-1) of Toluca, Mexico in Pinoy Pride XIV dubbed as "Night of Champions" on June 2, 2012 at the Resorts World Manila.
The Murciahanon native has studied Salguero’s game and read his style. Nietes have sparred more than a hundred times in preparation for this fight.
This will be the first title defense of Nietes after dethroning erstwhile title holder Ramon Garcia Hirales, also of Mexico, in October last year at the University of St. La Salle Coliseum in Bacolod City.
Meanwhile, also seeing action in the undercard is undefeated Milan "El Metodico" Melindo (26 10KOs) who will be taking former WBO light flyweight titlist Jesus Geles (13 5KOs-2-1) of Columbia for the vacant WBO International flyweight title.
Melindo is rated No.1 contender by the WBO in his division and is on collision path with Filipino-American champion Brian Viloria. If ever Melindo pasts Geles on June 2, he will more likely becomes Viloria’s mandatory challenger.
ALA Promotions President/CEO Michael Aldeguer said that they don’t want to fight a fellow Filipino for the title but if they cannot avoid it they will take the fight.
In the undercard, Bacolodnon and undefeated ALA gym stalwart Genesis "Azukal" Servania (17 5KOs) will be facing the real Genaro "Poblanito" Garcia (38-8-0, 22KOs) in the undercard fight for the vacant World Boxing Council International Silver super bantamweight title.
Aside from fighting Servania, Garcia also aims to clean his image after his name was used by an impostor who fought Rey "Boom Boom" Bautista but went down in the second round in Bohol last February.
Servania, on the other hand, is excited to face Garcia – who had faced eight world champions and owned a rare knockout win over Mexican Rafael Marquez.
Meanwhile, Bago City-born undefeated Arthur "El Matador" Villanueva (18 12KOs) will try to defend his unblemished record against Jeffrey Cerna of Manila.
Villanueva, who fights under Top Prime Stable of Rev. Henry Guanzon, won his last fight against Rey Migreno in Cebu City Waterfront Hotel & Casino last March of this year.
Also eyeing to improve his record after his successful fight at the L’ Fisher Hotel in Bacolod last May 4, Juren Labordo of Bacolod City will battle Fel Morales of Manila.
Labordo, in his last fight, won over Davaeño Anastacio Gallardo via unanimous in a 4-rounder fight of 112 pounds division.*
