Feature: Italia Goes Art
The Onib Olmedo exhibit tour of the Philippines marking his 75th birthday
began in our very own Bacolod’s Italia restaurant. With his glamorous widow

Nune Alvarado & Omon Maravilla
First on my A-list was Charlie Cojuangco who is an avid art collector—daring to go on with an art gallery of his own in Imperial Manille. Culture vulture Inday Pefiangco who owns a couple of Onib Olmedo’s works also attended with her coterie of socialites led by sultry eyed Ging Puey. The literati also came in the persona of Violeta Gonzaga with a breezy new hairdo. Negrense original artist Nuni Alvarado came in homage, although time will prove his worth as another very important figure in Philippine art.

Italia resto went all out for this opening with a buffet table of specialties including their very special paella. But the glitz of the night could not overshadow the works of the master expressionist in Philippine art. The first Filipino to win the prestigious award in Cagnes sur Mer, France, Onib Olmedo was a catharsis to the Filipino consciousness of art when he reached his peak in the 90s and heralded a new era of artistic nuance beyond the appreciation of paintings as mere decorations. The exhibit goes on until June 15.
