Opinion: Jessica Sanchez and the Boycott Issue on China

Terrible! China moves to the next level of its bullying of the Philippines. There are many patriots like Capt. Nicanor Faeldon who, like Jose Rizal’s story

of the moth’s burning on the candle, are willing to sacrifice so as to stir this country into motion.

The Filipino pride cannot take it to be bullied. China might be surprised when like a carabao Filipinos would be like a moth and like its national heroes, willing to die because we cannot swallow our pride. Sometimes other Filipinos die without thinking. We are known for our juramentados. That’s why it took America a long time to subdue this country. Until today some of our Muslim brothers are not friendly to the Americans.

The world over we showed that we are class fighters. While the Americans easily gave up Bataan to the Japs on WWII, the Filipinos remained guerillas. Later on even as Hukbalahap. The Huks were fighting foreigners. It graduated into NPAs that until today remain unsubdued. They might be on the left, but they know when we are relegated to the corner to swallow our pride. Filipinos are not known to run away from a fight.

Atty. Jerry Basiao is one of those I talked to, during our coffee at Rinjin Restaurant. Although Basiao sounds Chinese but Jerry looks more like Hispanic. He is angry for what is being done to us and he would like to boycott the Chinese in Bacolod. Opps! Wrong enemy Jerry, many of the local Chinese are our friends. I know they are more Filipinos than their former chink brothers.

I do not know how patriotic other Filipinos are now. Our corrupt system and creating a society of the hopeless made many of us callous and accept what will be will be.

War and times can make traitors out of men. But only few turned kempetai during WWII. The psyche of the Filipino is complex, but in many instances when we are tested, we act as one.

We are one all over during times of test. We act as one when we are proud as Filipinos when our brothers and sisters make good all over the world.

Jessica Sanchez who is a finalist in American Idol could have been out due to low votes casted on line and since she is terribly good, was saved by the Judges Steven Tyler, Randy Jackson and Jennifer Lopez. We do not know if she would make it, but the terrible campaign of Filipinos to boost her votes is something phenomenal.

We are now scattered all over the world as class workers. Not workers on the gutter like some Chinese, but as managers and as white collar job workers. In fact, we are number two on money matters next to the White Americans when I was there in New York.

We need not worry of Chinese tourists not allowed to come here. Or of their boycott of our bananas and other threats they are making. Fact is, they are a bully. And they do that thinking we are small.

The world is watching. Like Hitler, the Chinese bullies can bully anyone. But I think they pick up the wrong guys. Magellan fell on our shore and we never regretted it. Nor did we ever think that he was god on a shining armor.

We can hurt the Chinese economy if we begin now calling all our brothers and sisters all over the world to stop buying made in China products.

Perhaps the Chinese forgot that when they started with their industry, they turned to us for scrap irons.

Filipinos are known as good businessmen. So let’s begin the boycott now. Only, be sure that it is not our Taiwanese brothers for they are victims themselves by big China’s bullying. Let’s deal with our near neighbors like India, Indonesia, Vietnam and other Aseans.

Please don’t ever boycott our Bacolod Chinese friends. They are not our enemies. In fact, as the saying goes, the enemies are us if we do not act now.*
