The primary objective of the Philippine Shrimp Industry, Inc. is to promote and maintain the growth and improvement of the shrimp industry in the Philippines relative to research, development, production and marketing of aquaculture products such as shrimps, prawns and other aquatic species.

It also serves as an instrument and voice of the shrimp industry to convey the concerns, needs, problems and other issues.

Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Director, Atty. Asis G. Perez represented Dept. of Agriculture Secretary, Proceso J. Alcala. Perez read the DA Secretary’s keynote speech during the opening ceremonies, stating his support of the initiatives by congress to the benefit of the Filipino farmers and fisher folks.

Meanwhile, Gov. Marañon cited the achievements of Negros Occidental in terms of agricultural development that had made a difference in the lives of Negrense farmers. The 8th Phil. Shrimp Congress is themed, "Proven Technologies and Promising Innovations."

Also present in the opening ceremonies were Philshrimp President Roberto Gatuslao; PhilShrimp Executive Secretary, Atty. German D. Cruz; Assistant Director For Admin - BFAR, Atty. Benjamin F. S. Tabios, Jr.; and Bacolod City Mayor Evelio Leonardia, among others.* (Capitol News)
