Sports: Orientation & Dry-run in Crisis a Must

Orientation and constant dry-runduring crisis is a must and we should take it religously in time of emergency. The drills we undertake from those knowledgeable in crisis management groups should n ot be taken for granted because we need it udring emergency like the occurence of fire, shipwreck and earthquake.

In last Monday’s intensity 6.8 or 6.9 tremor is one classic example we should not linient on effectively observes the procedures of getting away from the occurrence in case of fire, shipwrecked or earthquake. Mostly all people were shocked, stunned and instead of “ presence of mind” resorted to shouting and panic. In most schools in Bacolod City, students are screaming instead of finding ways to calmed themselves. And result is horrible if there is stampede, like what happened in Gaisano Kabankalan, according to our source. Two shoppers were injured as a result of stampede as cracks on crystal windows of said business establishment was seen. Some lose their sense of mind and panic. It is good nothing were reported too serious in Bacolod City. Students, instead of rushing out high rise building remained inside and as if waiting for the end of the world. This is a bad precedence in time of emergency that autorities should put warning and personnel to handle the situation.

In my birthplace in barangay Aguisan, Himamaylan, my good friend Othelo Versoza texted me that residents are starting to evacuate to higher ground as advisory of tsunami is at hand and some of them fear of the aftershocks. Maybe they were frightened on what happened to Japan it will happen too in our place. Barangays Aguisan and Saraet are two adjoining barangays located in the seashore. But fear of tsunami is very remote since the area is protected by Guimaras Island province.

I called up my children in Cadiz City of their situation as some also feared that tsunami may occur, knowing that even whales run aground in the seashore of Barangays Daga and Banquerohan. However, the area is also protected by northern Iloilo and Bantayan island in Cebu. My other child even jokingly texted me that if tsunami will occur those corrupt government officials at the city hall were the first to be hit. We are thankfule that after a few hours, advisory of tsunami alert weretaken back, althoguh mild aftershocks arose twice at 5 and 7pm the same day. We thank our Almighty God nothing serious happen unlike in our counterpart in Negros Oriental that more than 50 persons were reported dead and scores still missing with the town ot Tayasan just across Kabankalan and Himamaylan cities were badly hit.

Newly crowned Filipino WBO Jr. Featherweight champion Nonito Donaire, Jr., had demanded public apology from Wilfredo Vasquez, Jr., not just asking apology from him after the fight which he won Saturday, February 4 (Sunday in Manila). Donaire said, Vasquez told him it was part of the business but he was not buying it and wanted public apology from him. Donaire added, doing insult against him is showing his disrespect to the Philippines and his wife. Despite hurting his left hand in early second or third rounds, the same hand brought Vasquez to the canvass in the 9th round with an uppercut and folwed with a left hook. It was the only knockdown in the 12-round schedule fight, not so devastating when he knocked out Vic Darchiinyan and Fernando Montiel. Let’s wait if Vcasquez really will make public apology. Who will be the next opponents of Donaire? Was it against Abner Mares of Mexico.

Unbeaten Floyd Mayweather, Jr., is scheduled to fight Miguel Cotto on May 5 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, while Manny Pacquiao will face Tim Bradley, Jr., on June 9 at the same venue. Many things happened in boxing wolrd and what we are going to do it to wait the result of the negotiations between their camps and their promoter. It seems in the boxing world politics also plays its role.*
